Different Types of Hemorrhoids
There are two main types of hemorrhoids, internal and external. Both of these types of hemorrhoids vary in severity, symptoms, and treatment options. With internal hemorrhoids, patients may not experience the symptoms usually associated with hemorrhoids like pain and itching, this is because the walls of the anal cavity have nerves that don’t sense pain, and they can only sense pressure. But the nerves located outside the anal canal are like those in the skin, they can feel pain, so external hemorrhoids are more painful. Plus, external hemorrhoids are always being irritated by clothing, sitting, and the environment such as moisture, heat or cold, so this causes the patient more discomfort.
So, because people with internal hemorrhoids don’t experience “normal” hemorrhoid symptoms, a lot of time they may even be unaware that they have hemorrhoids until they see blood after having a bowel movement. This bleeding may be the only symptom, but it is one to not be ignored. Untreated internal hemorrhoids can become so swollen that they push out of the anal canal becoming prolapsed hemorrhoids and sometimes they can become trapped outside the anal canal as in the case of a strangulated hemorrhoid. Both of these conditions can be more serious and painful than internal hemorrhoids.
Because external hemorrhoids are widely known, most patients will realize that they are experiencing symptoms associated with hemorrhoids and may be tempted to self diagnose. This is never a good idea with either type of hemroid condition, because only a doctor can get you a correct diagnosis. Anal bleeding always requires an exam and even something as simple as a case of hemorrhoids can get worse or more complicated if left untreated. To avoid potential complications and worse symptoms, it’s in your best interest to get examined by your doctor and start treating your hemorrhoids as soon as symptoms become apparent.
