Looking To Make Money With Your Website?

February 5th, 2010

Let’s say you’re running your own website.  It’s a pretty popular site, all about kite-flying in Maryland.  You know all the best parks in town, all the best kite-makers and designs, and you’ve got fully-illustrated instructions on make-your-own projects.  You’re pretty proud of yourself; the kite-flyers of Maryland swarm to your site.

But what if you could make money on that site?

Your kite-flying expertise could actually earn you money on the side!  Google’s Adsense program is designed for just such site developers as yourself, posting ads on your website and paying you for every time your adoring fans click on an advertisement.

How does it work?

Adsense is based on another program run by Google, Adwords.  Google Adwords is precisely the opposite of Adsense: it’s where advertisers pay Google to post their ads on Google’s search pages.  Since the advertisers also pay per click (or per impression – ad appearance,) Google makes more money when those advertisements appear on more websites.  That’s why Google would want to farm out its advertising to smaller websites, like your kite extravaganza.  When you join Adsense, Google posts other people’s ads on your site, so they can get more “air time” and Google can make more money from them.  Google pays you a piece of this profit to compensate you for allowing the ads on your website.

One advantage of the Adsense program is the increased relevance of the ads on your site.  When Google places an ad on your site, it places it based on a niche or a keyword, so that you can choose what kind of ads are relevant to your site.  This means that when Aunt Tracey visits your site to find the best kite part around town, she doesn’t get bombarded with advertisements for energy drinks.  The ads that appear on your website will be about kites and other kite-related activities.

If you’ve got a website, you can make money with Google!  Check out the Adsense program today!

Money Making Ideas

There are lots of money making ideas available out there, but the easiest, by far, is to make money yourself.  You can work at a job, but that requires a commitment to an employer and you are only able to make your wages.  If you start your own businesses, no matter how small, you are free to run it how you want.

You can make a small, small business on just about anything.  Babysitting, landscaping, house-cleaning, etc. can all be considered small businesses.  You can do any of them full time if you take them seriously and work hard.  If you learn how to market and promote your business effectively, you can gain even more clients and do really well with it.

In the end, if you hate it, you can stop.  If you still have a full time job, you know it was just something to try out and it didn’t work out, but if you don’t give it a try, you never know if it would have succeeded.

There are about a gazillion blogs being set up each and every day.  Some are self hosting, others are using services like blogger and wordpress.com, and others are just micro blogging on Twitter or writing “notes” on Facebook.  Either way it seems as though people are doing whatever they can to catch and ride the blogging wave.

As part of web 2.0 blogging is a great tool to try and make money online.  As part of the web 2.0 it is also a very inexpensive way to start a potentially huge business.  To start a print magazine today you would have to invest a few million dollars in order to print it and get into Borders, Barnes and Noble, and the local grocery store.  Ever wonder why the periodicals section continues to shrink?  Yes, it is because of the internet and the economies of scale inherent in blogging.

So you want to make money by blogging?  Well you need to do some SEO but you also need to put yo name out there.  Many people are finding success writing about their site on blogging directories like Blograters.com and other similar services.  While not the holy grail, by the way the holy grail is hard work, this is a good way of boosting traffic and improving your blogs visibility.
