Facts About Depilatory Creams

February 8th, 2010

A depilatory cream is a beauty product which is used to removal unwanted hair. These products may actually be in the form of a cream or a lotion. The product contains a chemical which reacts with hair, breaking it down so that it “dissolves” at skin level and can be washed away. As the chemicals don’t affect the hair below skin level, the hair grows back within a few days but without the sharp stubbly effect that you might expect from shaving.

You should never use a depilatory cream without doing a so-called “patch test”. You need to follow the instructions on the packaging of the product for this, but it usually consists of applying a little of the product to your skin to tests whether you have a bad reaction. Obviously if you skin becomes sore or you develop a rash then you would not then go on to use the product over the whole of your arms, legs or bikini line.

Most hair can be treated by the product but the coarser and darker the hair, the more tricky it seems to be. This means that a hair removal cream is not suitable for dealing with a man’s beard. Although there are certainly depilatory creams designed for the man in your life such as Veet for Men, these are meant to be used on areas of the body such as the back and chest. For the most part, formulas are similar to those of female depilatories but the packaging and fragrance will be designed for men.

When using a depilatory cream be sure to follow the instructions exactly especially about the time to leave it on your skin as you can get sore if you leave it on too long and it will not be effective if you don’t leave it on for the full time. Take a timer into the bathroom with you so that you are not forced to guess.
