General Merchandise of Puerto Rico Slows, Helps Haiti
In the aftermath of the Haiti disaster, many individuals and organization around the world are mobilizing to do what they can to help as much as possible. It is painfully frustrating for many to be so far away and feel so helpless when so many people are in such need. While financial donations to well recognized organizations such as the Red Cross and others are certainly helpful, many people currently find themselves in a time where they are unable to donate as much as they would like, as they themselves are at, or near the end of their own personal, financial rope. At times like this, thoughts and prayers are about as much as can be offered. And believe me, the wonderful people of Haiti can use all the positive thoughts, prayers and general ‘good vibes’ that can be sent their way.
One colleague I know who runs a small shop near the beach normally gets much of his general merchandise from Puerto Rico. Clearly things have not been running as smoothly as possible, with the contacts he has in Puerto Rico doing what they can to help their neighbors. As such, the normal flow of his business has suffered significantly. When his regular customers have been unable to find what they came for, instead of being upset, they have asked if they could simply donate there at the store in an effort to help. Sometimes, even a well known entity like the Red Cross remains a nameless, faceless group, and having a personal connection, even several steps removed, helps people relate and connect and draws out their best, most caring sides.
If you don’t have a personal connection to anyone like this, I urge you to trust in the Red Cross or some other recognized aid agency. Don’t let the disconnect keep you from reaching out in a time of such need. The people of Haiti need you. The people of the world need each other in these times.
