February 6th, 2010

When it comes to navigating in your car there have been many options through the years – maps, internet directions, and now, car GPS systems. GPS not only provides you with the maps you need to get around, it also provides you with precise directions to where you want to go. Most models even go so far as to “talk” to you while driving so you don’t miss that next turn!

When considering the purchase of an auto GPS, you may be overwhelmed by the sheer multitude of the options available to you. Garmin, Magellan and TomTom are among three of the leading brands available and each of these have several different models with different levels of options. It is best to visit a technology review website such as CNET to review the different options available to you within the different models. Options you will find include data services with internet access (extra fees may apply), touch screens, Bluetooth technology and voice recognition software. Higher end devices might include all of these features (and more), while lower end devices may have one or two of these additional features if any. All of these devices easily mount on your windshield or dashboard.

If all you want is a GPS that will tell you where you are and how to get there, you will find many options in the $100-$200 dollar range. However, if you want the “Cadillac” of GPS devices, you can spend up to $500 or more. You can find all models, from the most economical to the most advanced, at stores like BestBuy, Staples, Target, Wal-Mart and many others. One good option if you are trying to save some money is eBay – you might find a like new, refurbished car GPS there for up to 50% off! GPS used to be something used only by the military. Aircraft and watercraft followed, and now, you too can take advantage of this amazing technology to make your next road trip that much easier.
